The saga of The Lion King is set in motion in a vast savanna territory in Africa; set in The Pride Lands, the teenage heir Simba is fated to take over after his father, before tragedy strikes because of the actions of his dishonorable uncle Scar and his desire to rule the Pride Lands and become ruler himself. The first half's series of incidents leads to the young prince's banishment from his home and the account of his eventual journey back to bring peace to his lands and citizens.
The Lion King, since its formation, had to develop extensive research on real African society and historical texts given the play's setting. The narrative itself is actually based on real African leaders and real happenings – Simba actually equates to the animal counterpart of Sundiata Mansa, the Emperor of the Imperial Mali who was aptly called The Lion of Mali.
Julie Taymor, the first female director in Broadway history to win a Tony for Best Direction of a Musical, made sure to be respectful of East Asian and African cultural sources, particularly design, which resulted in a faultless Broadway production of the show. The outfits when seen are gracious portrayals of a few ethnic groups in Africa, a portrayal of which is Simba's outfit in the play which as it happens based on Kenyan Maasi warriors' armor. Just like the previous 1994 motion picture, the outstanding musical compositions created by Elton John and Tim Rice pays homage to its African roots, with the stage adaptation even adding numbers with lyrics that are sung either partially or entirely in African languages including Swahili and Zulu. Additionally, the African inspiration is also evident in dance numbers, with many of the numbers consistently featuring the seamlessness of Bali-inspired movements.
The costume design, African influence and superb acting all mix together so well to make up an smashing musical. This 6 Tony show-stopping production, including Best Musical, has been seen by over 120 million people around the globe.
