Synopsis

The Notebook is centered around the ever-lasting romance between Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton. Set in South Carolina in the 1940s, Noah is a mill worker, and Allie is a wealthy woman brought up by an upper class family. While they both fall for each other in a whirlwind summer romance, Allie’s parents disapprove. She then returns to Charleston, goes to college, and then trains as a nurse, and Noah enlists in World War II. 

Their love spans many years and Noah builds Allie her dream home. Even though Allie is engaged to a wealthy lawyer and war hero, the couple eventually rekindle their relationship. However, the hurdles of Alzheimer’s disease pose a new challenge, testing their love until the very end.

Creative Team

The Notebook musical features an adapted book by the masterful playwright BEKAH BRUNSTETTER. If you didn’t already know, she was the brains behind the 3x Emmy award-winning “This Is Us,” as well as the play “The Cake.” Her work navigates family dynamics, identity, and social issues.

The musical’s music and lyrics are by the skilled INGRID MICHAELSON. She is a popular indie singer and songwriter recognized and cherished around the world for her pop-fulled emotional lyrics.

History and Awards

Adapted from Nicholas Sparks’s bestselling novel (1996) and the legendary 2004 movie. The musical opened its doors at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in September 2022 to glowing reviews. In spring 2024, the Notebook premiered at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in New York. The cast included the likes of Maryann Plunkett and Dorian Harewood as the older Allie and Noah, with Joy Woods, Ryan Vasquez, Jordan Tyson, and John Cardoza playing their younger selves. The Broadway show ran for a total of 8 months, closing on the 15th of December 2024. The North American tour kickstarted in September 2025, launching in Cleveland, OH.

The Notebook — The Musical has snagged multiple nominations. The production earned 3 Tony Award nominations for Best Book of a Musical, Best Leading Actor in a Musical (Dorian Harewood), and Best Leading Actress in a Musical (Maryann Plunkett). The musical was also nominated at the coveted Drama League Awards for Outstanding Production of a Musical, and Distinguished Performance nods for Harewood and Plunkett. The Notebook also received nominations for Outstanding Featured Performance in a Musical for both leading actors, as well as a well-deserved Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Performer (Maryann Plunkett).
