Mamma Mia! ‘s world premiere opened in 1999 at the Prince Edward Theatre. This West End production received a nomination from the Grammy Awards and four from the Laurence Olivier, winning Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical. It eventually transferred to the Prince of Wales Theatre and then to the Novello Theater, where it still plays today after reopening in 2021 from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The acclaim of the London show would spawn North American productions in Toronto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago. But it was only in October of 2001 that the musical hit the Broadway stage. Here, it was nominated five times at the Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and three times at the Drama Desk Awards. The show moved to the Broadhurst Theatre from the Winter Garden Theatre and played until 2015. At the end of its run, Mamma Mia! engaged in 5,773 performances, clinching the record for longest-running jukebox musical on Broadway.

The franchise would later expand into more than fifty countries across all six continents, branching off into highly anticipated tours, which include the original North American stint that won Best Musical Score from the Touring Broadway Awards. Today, Mamma Mia! has been translated into sixteen languages, grossing over $4 billion worldwide.
