SYNOPSIS

The emotional tale of Les Misérables, as inspired by the 1862 eponymous novel by Victor Hugo, follows the remarkable journey of Jean Valjean – a French peasant recently released on parole following a lengthy jail sentence for stealing a loaf of bread to feed a hungry child. After resorting to theft once more to ensure his survival, Jean Valjean is shown a tremendous mercy by the very bishop he stole from, and decides to break his parole and start a new and better life – not as Jean Valjean, but as somebody else. He succeeds in becoming financially stable, and adopts the orphaned Cosette following the death of her mother, Fantine. As Cosette grows up, they find themselves in the midst of revolution in France. Cosette falls in love with one of the young idealists who attempts to overthrow the government at a street barricade, all the while Jean Valjean is being pursued by a police inspector with one purpose: his own quest for justice.

Les Misérables is a tale imbued with gravitas, authenticity, vulnerability, raw humanity, and impact, and is powerful enough to turn even the hardest of hearts into a mushy pulp of emotion.

HISTORY AND LEGACY

The idea to transform Victor Hugo’s iconic 1862 novel into a larger-than-life theatrical production was that of Alain Boublil. Together with composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and Boublil’s friend Jean-Marc Matel, the three masterminds developed Les Misérables into a concept album, released in 1980 in French. With the assistance of critically acclaimed producer Cameron Mackintosh and translators Herbert Kretzmer and Siobhan Bracke, Les Misérables premiered in English in 1985 at the Barbican Centre before transferring to the West End, becoming the longest-running musical in the West End. The theatrical triumph opened on Broadway in 1987, becoming the sixth longest-running Broadway production in history.

To date,  Les Misérables has racked up countless notable awards, including a Laurence Olivier Award, eight Tony Awards, five Drama Desk Awards, a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, two Dora Awards, a Green Room Award, and five Helpmann Awards.

“With a cast that never misses a note, the West End’s longest running musical proves a haunting and thrilling inspiration.” – The Guardian
