For the past two centuries audiences around the world have been enjoying Italian composer Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber Of Seville. The opera buffa in two acts, with libretto by Cesare Sterbini, quickly became a standard among operatic repertoire - one all opera-fanatics, music-lovers, theatregoers, and curious folk must see - and with good reason. With its libretto based upon the first play of French playwright Pierre Beaumarchais’ Figaro-trilogy, The Barber Of Seville is one of the most iconic works of comedy within music, often being called the opera buffa of all opere buffe. It’s side-splittingly hilarious; it’s charismatic and witty; it’s pure operatic magic - musically, visually, theatrically - the works; it’s bursting with energy and joie de vivre; it’s vivid, merry, and highly entertaining, while retaining the technical sophistication one would expect from a renowned opera.
This winter, as part of San Diego Opera’s season, The Barber Of Seville, conducted by Yves Abel and directed by Chuck Hudson, will be taking the stage at the iconic San Diego Civic Theatre. The opera will be performed in Italian, with the English and Spanish translations of the libretto projected above the stage. The San Diego Civic Theatre is rated as one of North America’s greatest theatres, boasting various types of theatrical events all year round. The venue ticks all the boxes - from its state-of-the-art sound and lighting to the superb acoustics, from its wonderful amenities to the stunning sight-lines, and boasts luxurious seating for up to 2,900 patrons spread across an orchestra floor, mezzanine, dress circle, and balcony.
Apart from an operatic production that will tickle the giggle-spots, entertain with its wild plot, stun with its glorious and memorable music, and dazzle the way only opera can, audiences can also look forward to experiencing the characters come to life with the stellar cast. The cast includes the talents of Dean Murphy as Figaro, Stephanie Doche as Rosina, Minghao Liu as Count Almaviva, Patrick Carfizzi as Doctor Bartolo, Craig Colclough as Don Basilio, Tasha Hokuao Koontz as Berta, and Joseph Calzada as Fiorello.
It’s undeniable: the stage loves The Barber Of Seville, and it loves the stage. Go ahead, get your tickets - you’ve never enjoyed a production as much as you’ll enjoy this one!
