Carmen is an opera that was first staged in 1875 with music by Georges Bizet. It is said to be the last masterpiece of the esteemed French composer. The opera rose to fame ten years after Bizet’s passing. The story explores the fiery and exciting Carmen, a beautiful young lady that has caught the attention of soldier Don Jose after she tosses a flower at him. He grew so fond of her that he joined her band of gypsys. However, Carmen’s attention to Jose didn’t last very long as she turned her attention to a bullfighter named Escamillo.
