More than 40 years ago, a grand idea was conceived when Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boubil, and Jean-Marc Natel created the original stage script for Les Misérables (initially in the French language). Stemming from Victor Hugo’s original book of the same title, Les Misérables was modified into a live stage adaptation performed as a fully lyricized play, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that time period.
Following a very short run in Paris, there was obviously a growing demand to create a more accessible version, and once Cameron Macikintosh heard the soundtrack, he instantly fell in love and decided to create an English version in collaboration with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the English songs. The English version of the musical at first debuted with a two-month duration at the Barbican Centre, but due to its financial success and repeatedly sold-out shows, it quickly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a more bustling and premier theater, and ran for 19 years. The musical then relocated one more time to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and maintains its shows up until today. Adding together all its tours since its creation in 1980, Les Mis is actually the longest-running musical in the entire world.
With almost 40 years in London solely and not even counting its shows in other cities, including and definitely not limited to its well-received Broadway seasons, it is undeniable that Les Misérables continues to be spectacular in the perspective of the play's fanbase. The narrative and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, passion, and unrequited love, always brings each viewer to tears because of the apparent emotion behind the mask of each character and act presented. Les Misérables has become so famous that the play has been converted to motion pictures several times and received very positively even on a different platform.
This approaching September’s run of Les Mis brings it to California, where the show will be performed on Friday 19th September 2025, in San Diego Civic Theatre, San Diego.
