Les Miserables at San Diego Civic Theatre

From the moment of the play's inception more than 40 years ago, Les Misérables has transformed from a short-lived musical sung in French found in Paris, France to today's longest-running musical in the eyes of local and international audiences. Over the last century that the musical has been ongoing, the show has toured in 53 countries, in 22 different languages, and has been watched by over 130 million people in each locale visited.

In September, the musical’s next season brings it to a new location in San Diego, where Les Misérables will be hosted in San Diego Civic Theatre on Thursday 18th September 2025. San Diego Civic Theatre was made to be a landmark of the city as the favorite theater venue of San Diego, housing a spacious arrangement inside the theater that is sizeable enough to hold a play of this standard, in addition to suitable facilities that are contained inside the venue.

Les Misérables revolves around the tale of Jean Valjean, an ex-convict distressingly searching for a second chance after he gets away from the law. Valjean's full story, and his ultimate fate, are staged with everything lyricized from the opening number to the finish of the musical. The West End musical being fully sung-through is a unique characteristic that this musical has over other known Broadway plays, and is the primary reason why each individual song performance never fails in its objective of depicting each personal struggle in every sentence or note sung.

It's quite unique and as a result of this style, the play is also overflowing with impressive dramatic performances. Interestingly, in the face of the large number of tunes that can be watched in this grand musical, each role in the play is able to be highlighted, with each discrete ballad showing the vocal range of each actor. Neither theatergoers nor film viewers of Les Mis can stop thinking about Fantine’s “I Dreamed A Dream”, which brings with the song a powerful longing and has been covered countlessly by famous artists in present-day television. “Bring Him Home” also emotionally closes out the conflict in our beloved characters, revealing to us the very soul of Valjean's character in just one completely awesome performance.
