While stationed in the Navy at San Diego, Gary Owen was already making people laugh. On weekends he would drive to locan clubs in Los Angeles and perform on open mic nights. In 1996, he performed in an majority-black audience and his set was a major hit. Since then, Owen amassed a large black following. His brand of comedy has endeared the African-American fan base so much so that he later won the Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego. Since his breakthrough, Owen has appeared in numerous high profile gigs including BET ComicView. Ebony magazine even dubbed him the “Black America's Favorite White Comic.” In 2018, Owen released his debut comedy special Breakin’ Out the Park. The set was well received by viewers from all over the globe. Owen would later release several more highly acclaimed specials, including the highly rated Black Famous. In 2025, he released his latest special No S.
