The Sound of Music at San Diego Civic Theatre
San Diego, you’ve seen headlines about the latest Broadway revival of the golden age favorite, you’ve heard the buzz about a possible North American tour, and you’ve heard some rumours that San Diego will be alive with the sound of music soon. Let’s squash the rumours and justify the buzz: one of Broadway’s most acclaimed directors, Jack O’Brien, has breathed new life into the six-decade-old favorite, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s world-renowned theatrical gem, The Sound Of Music, is hot off Broadway, and will be coming to the San Diego Civic Theatre soon!
It’s still the beautiful love story, it’s still all the iconic songs you adore, it’s still the captivating polished gem that knocked the musical world off its axis long ago, it’s still the feelgood theatre piece that melt hearts left, right, and centre – but this time around, it has been stripped off all the embellishments that attached itself to the production over the years; it has been revisited, revived, and is returning – fresh, gorgeous, and wonderful!

“A warmly-pulsating, captivating drama set to the most imaginative use of the lilting R-H tunes, magnificently mounted and with a brilliant cast.” – Variety

SYNOPSIS
When Maria, a free-spirited and exceptionally musical nun, is advised to spend some time outside the abbey to decide whether the monastic life is something she truly wants, she takes on the position of governess for the seven children of the widowed Austro-Hungarian Navy submarine Captain Georg von Trapp. During her time with the family, various challenges befalls them – from having to win over the hearts of the seven children that has been lacking a mother-figure in their life to the fact that music has little place in the family, from the imminent Nazi-threat following the 1938 Anschluss and Captain von Trapp being commissioned to join Germany’s navy to the blossoming romance between Maria, who vowed to become a nun, and Captain von Trapp, a man engaged to be married. In spite of the trials and tribulations, Maria succeeds in bringing much needed happiness – and music – back to the family.

HISTORY AND LEGACY
The Sound Of Music is based on Maria von Trapp’s memoir, The Story Of The Trapp Family Singers, as published in 1949. With playwrights Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse’s book exploding with heartmelting material masterfully woven together, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s incredible music, including memorable songs such as Maria, Do-Re-Mi, So Long Farewell, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Edelweiss, and The Sound Of Music, that went on to become standards, the result was perfection – a musical with success that few can hold a candle to. The 1959 premiere at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway, under direction of Vincent J. Donehue and choreography by Joe Layton, was a raging success. The first run of The Sound Of Music saw 1,443 performances, was met with massive critical acclaim, and racked up no less than five Tony Awards, a Theatre World Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award.
Since then, there has been numerous revivals of The Sound Of Music – all monumental successes; it has been produced countless times around the globe – drawing full houses without fail; and has been adapted to film in 1965, featuring Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain Georg von Trapp, which landed five Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Laurel Awards among many others.
It is undeniable: The Sound Of Music is the musical of all musicals and the world’s most beloved and acclaimed production; it is a tried-and-tested classic that just keeps on winning hearts everywhere; it is lovely, endearing, wholesome, and timeless; it is incredibly relevant in spite of its age; and it is inevitable that you’ll find yourself smiling, swaying, singing, and swooning all at once.
