More than 40 years ago, a grand idea was conceived when Jean-Marc Natel, Claude-Michel Schönberg, and Alain Boubil wrote the original play script for the now-famous musical, Les Misérables (originally in French). Created from Victor Hugo’s late novel of the same title, the plot of Les Mis was modified and turned into a musical as a fully sung-through show, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that era.

Following a very short run in Paris, there was obviously a growing demand to create an English version, and when Cameron Macikintosh listened to the musical score, he instantly fell in love and announced he was going to produce an English version while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the new songs. The English version of the musical at first performed with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but because of its impressive success and positive reviews from critics, it rapidly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a more bustling and premier location, and was performed for almost 20 years. Les Mis then relocated one more time to another theater, the Queen’s Theatre (which after some time was renovated and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in roughly half a decade ago), and continues to run up until today. Adding together all its tours since its first showing four decades ago, Les Mis is statistically the longest-running musical in the entire world.

With almost 4 decades in West End solely and not even enumerating its productions in foreign locations, including and definitely not limited to its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is incontrovertible that this global hit endures and is amazing in the eyes of the play's audiences. The narrative and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around redemption, passion, and unrequited love, tugs on a viewer's heartstrings because of the apparent heart behind the mask of each character and act staged. The musical has become so famous that it has been adapted to motion pictures numerous times and gained loyal fanbases even on a different platform.

This upcoming September’s season of Les Misérables has it in California, where the show will be performed on Sunday 21st September 2025, in San Diego Civic Theatre, San Diego.
