Les Miserables at San Diego Civic Theatre

Happening specifically throughout the period in the middle of the widespread rebellion in 1832 in France, Les Misérables is the tale of Jean Valjean, a citizen of Paris who was convicted for 19 years because of stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. After his time on the chain gang, he escapes and searches for a second chance to live his life; he then uses a brand new name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still hiding from the law and Javert, an officer who has known Valjean since his time in the chain gang and intent on capturing and bringing Valjean face the consequences of his previous escape.

Happening over a period of roughly two decades across its 2-hour and 50-minute run, Valjean is entangled by accidental means with numerous important people throughout the show – Fantine is one of Jean Valjean's factory employees who mothers an illegitimate infant; Cosette is the foster child of Jean Valjean, who by no surprise Fantine’s infant; Marius, a student on the side of the insurgency and the love interest of Cosette. Side characters shown in the musical consist of the Thénardiers, greedy proprietors who think only of themselves and are consumed with making profit by all means; Eponine, their daughter, who is desperately infatuated with for Marius; and members of the government opposition specifically Gavroche, a naive but resourceful street urchin, and the rebellion’s fearless leader, Enjolras.

This vibrant ensemble of characters who meet by fate and their individual tales are adapted skillfully on live stage, not just with the musical's 1800s French-inspired outfit and stage creations, but principally with Les Mis being sung-through fully from beginning to end. With famous numbers such as “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as highlights of its astounding musical score, the heart-stopping show is able to communicate the real and unmasked personalities hiding behind each and every character that comes to life in the theater.
