"Six — The Musical" was created as a production by the Cambridge University Musical Theatre Society in 2017 in the United Kingdom. The positive reviews of those engagements created an opportunity for a professional production that toured the UK in 2018.
"Six" made its official run on London’s West End in 2019. It had a acclaimed run until COVID-19 disrupted theater for most of 2020.
The musical persevered to grow in popularity and was involved in tours around the world. Eventually moving to New York City, where it was the first new play to appear on Broadway after COVID-19.
It continues to play in venues across the country and the world today. An interesting twist to the creation of "Six" was that Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss used actual popular singers to model the characters. They took inspiration from musicians like Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Adele, Celine Dion, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Alicia Keys during character creation.

"Six" is the retelling of the wives of King Henry VIII, who was an infamous king of England in the early 1500s. During his nearly 4 decades as king, he married six times. His demands to annul his first marriage saw the separation of the Church of England from papal authority. Many people probably have heard of the story of Henry VIII. However, you may not know the story of his many wives. That’s where "Six" picks up.
This musical delves into the story of the six queens as they tell their difficult experiences with the king. The queens try to decide who had the roughest experience in living with the king. The queens discuss divorce, rejections, infidelity, and even beheadings in a way that keeps you laughing while also touching your soul. They even place a modern twist on the story by incorporating a dating app through a parody.
Eventually, they realize that fighting over who had the toughest time with Henry VIII is not helpful. They come to realize that Henry VIII denied their individuality. They’re not just the six wives of Henry VIII - they have their personal strengths that deserve celebrating. The Six eventually come together to write new endings to their lives. They achieve their “happily ever afters” that Henry VIII denied them by dreaming of what their lives would’ve been like without seeing Henry VIII.
